Manohla Dargis, The New York Times film critic, wrote last year about the many recent films portraying Africa as a place of corruption, violence, and disease: “It is exhausting having your conscience pricked so regularly.” Yet, Africa possesses enormous diversity and cultural richness that rarely is depicted by the media.
Rhythms of the Globe believes there is a substantial commercial opportunity for a movie with a positive rendering of Africa and her people. And what better way to render Africa than through her music. In the tradition of The Harder They Come and Saturday Night Fever, that showcased Reggae and disco, Akwaaba, will serve as a platform for African music. While there will be some traditional Ghanaian high life music, at the forefront will be contemporary Ghanaian music, including hip life (“hip hop”), so that so that audiences can easily relate these sounds and rhythms to present day Western pop music.
